ACT Watch Website
PSI wanted to create a new programme (ACTwatch) that would become the trusted name in driving macro and country-specific policy for malaria medicines globally, using an evidence based approach.
An Online Brand
They were seeking to establish a strong online presence for the new programme that was clearly aligned with its intended audience of global health professionals, grant-makers and health policy wonks. From the onset, it was clear that this would be a predominantly internet-based brand, so we set out to create the identity based on the programme's requirements. [ See ACTwatch Identity Design Project ]
A highly functional website was in order.
The programme would have 8 country based teams that were to design their research tools, then post and analyse the results collaboratively on the programme’s website.
The entire programme would be run online, from far-flung developing countries with extremely slow internet connections.
We summarised the brief to its basics, first, to attract attention and command respect from external audiences, and to keep internal audiences focused, motivated and operational. This would then translate into building an online collaborative document management system as a simple and usable website, which would be the main platform for the country based teams' working environment.
To encapsulate the excellence in professionalism and commitment demonstrated in the programme's field work, we created several function-based tools that would feature throughout the website.
Colour-coded document system for the various survey types, with overlayed status indicators.
The site allowed project colloborators to seamlessly integrate their findings and analyses on various aspects of data collection, analysis and policy recommendation.
A colour-coded, document version tracker that deployed a different icon for each (coloured) milestone of the project process.
The world's first online Malaria drug database
As a strategy to attract attention, traffic and give credibility to the website, we created a high-quality, comprehensive database of anti-malaria drugs (the only one online at the time).
This greatly improved search engine rankings based on relevance, and "certified" the website and the brand as the go-to place for quality information on antimalarials.
It’s easy for us to say that we created a brand and a tool that worked perfectly for facilitating the research and delivery of policy recommendations to donors and governments. But in reality, ACTwatch's results and influence made a surprising impression on us. And we are not the only ones celebrating this. It is one of the sharpest tools in the global fight against the scourge of Malaria. Its ability to detect change over time, makes it perfect for monitoring the effects of policy or intervention developments in specific countries and wider regions. The unique multi-country research platform that threads together anti-malarial supply and consumer behavior to provide an evidence base to policy makers, could not have been achieved without the current solution.
